WORKSHOPS:

Le Corps: SENS DEDANS DEHORS
summer workshop for dance-theater in the landscape.
Led by DJALMA PRIMORDIAL SCIENCE
At NOGANETS, Puygaillard de Quercy, FRANCE.
August 01—10, 2008

Our workshop Le Corps: SENS DEDANS DEHORS remains deeply connected with the process of unmasking the body-- a turning of inside-out and an inviting of the outside in. Each day consists of 8 to 10 hours of physical exploration. We begin with a rigorous warm-up, unleashing the body's energy reserves and moving this charge through the collective body of the group, establishing the voice and breath as an extension of the organs. Our practice continues with solo, partner, and group exercises. Half of each day will be spent inside the studio accompanied by live sound of musician Jeff Gburek. Mixing environmental sound materials and electronics he creates atmospheres that help to deepen the internal experience of the mover. The remaining half of each day will be dedicated to encounters of the body and the landscape.

We research seeing with the ear, to understand how sound exists as invisible movement, to imagine how invisible movement might sound. We develop a tactile eye, becoming a witness of each other and the environment. Blinded, we lengthen the nerves beyond the clothing of the skin to discover a "living space."

Considering the landscape as our primordial teacher, we examine a physical and emotional connectivity to place. We immerse ourselves in an unknown terrain to become lost and discover with new intimacy the dance of the microcasm. The drama dormant in the earth reveals itself, lending us its instability, altering our posture, our thoughts. In a moment of confusion, we ecounter our foreign body: a perpetually shifting emotional landscape, a dislocating anatomy, a map undergoing disruption.

The body consumed by images stumbles into new identity: no identity-- the ground from which self-creation springs. The dancer becomes a cold fossil slipping inside out, a dry trembling leaf in the trunk of an elephant, a sweating stone, the stuttering teeth of a crank. An agitated stillness transports us beyond the human, traversing infinite shades green, our dance is not through space, but through states of being.

August 01—10, 2008. The workshop will be taught in French and English and is open to people of all experience. Participants will need to bring their own tent and sleeping bags. The workshop begins the evening of August 01 (arrival between 17:00 and 19:00) and ends the morning of August 10 (10:00). Transport from Montauban to NOGANETS will be coordinated for those traveling by train. The group will cook vegetarian meals communally. The workshop fee, which includes meals, is 580 euro/530 euro for students and unemployed. Upon acceptance into the workshop, a non-refundable 75 euro registration fee which counts toward the total cost of the workshop should be paid in order to reserve your place. Remaining workshop balance to be paid in full by July 1, 2008. Early registration is encouraged, as the workshop size is limited to twelve participants. MIRRORMINDED CURIOUSITEASE
a performance inspired by the restless corpse
of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake and the deviant eye of his daughter Lucia.
Dance: Ephia and A.M. Palermo. Live Sound: Jeff Gburek. Video Projection: Diegonante

James Joyce, giant of modern literature, continually on the verge of becoming blind, named his only daughter Lucia. She was his mirrorminded, cross-eyed saint of vision. Through his thick “fathom glasses” he watched her dance, setting fires left and right, fueling the creation of Finnegans Wake, burning her own tethers to reality.

MYOPIA: the secret boxcars of pubescence
unsound body: Ephia, Live sound: Jeff Gburek.
